HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. This act was
was enacted by Congress August 21, 1996, to encourage the development of health information systems that would enable the electronic
exchange of health care information in a private and secure way. Congress charged the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
to develop regulations for the use of electronic transaction standards, privacy, security, uniform identification numbers for
physicians, health plans, and purchasers of health care, and the like.
HIPAA Legislation affects every company in the Healthcare Industry with access to
Patient Information. Under HIPAA Legislation, every employee who, by virtue of his or
her position, is likely to obtain access to protected health information needs training
The federal government has mandated compliance and employees must complete HIPAA training on privacy and confidentiality by April 13, 2003.
