Securing Electronic Medical Records
HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, is a FEDERAL LAW
that sets guidelines for health care providers (and others) for electronic transactions AND
protecting patient privacy and security. There are no simple answers or solutions to HIPAA –
and there is no escaping the rules. Although there may be RARE exceptions, MicronetOhio
recommends that ALL DOCTORS / MEDICAL PERSONNEL comply with these rules. Keep in mind that
as these guidelines are now considered a Federal baseline for patient privacy and they will
be adopted by other health care professionals, patients will expect the same from you and your
